You know when your parents are talking about how life was like back in the 60’s and 70’s and you’re like, “Yeah, OK mum.” because it’s just so hard to wrap your head around the fact that things like iPhones didn’t exist? Isn’t it bizarre that in sixty years when our generation are old and hard of hearing we’ll be telling our grandchildren the same thing? I mean, I watch futuristic science-fiction movies, but I just really can’t imagine a world THAT advanced. In regards to technology how far can we really go? Is flying cars and teleportation and time-travel plausible? Is a cure for all cancers possible? How much of the world have we really even discovered? How many lost cities are there? I feel so incredibly small, like I’m a squirrel in a herd of elephants. I spend so much of my life consumed in self-pity and anger and greed and jealousy but I’ve never thought about what’s really out there. I feel incredibly intimidated about being one of six billion - but what about in forty years time when there are cures for previously incurable diseases? How many people will there be then? 10 billion? Will there be enough for that many people? Will something as great as the cure for Parkinson’s ruin the natural balance of the universe? Will the next generation be as ignorant and careless in regards to global warming?
I am the smallest link and I am nothing. Literally. We’re all nothing.
